National Council

  • The election of national council members is conducted during Sigma Kappa's biennial conventions. Every member of Sigma Kappa has the obligation and privilege to nominate qualified members to serve on national council.

    All candidates for elective office must meet the qualifications set forth in the Constitution and Bylaws. Each nominee  must have the leadership and commitment to fulfill her responsibility to work for the good of the Sorority and the future of our sisterhood.

    A brief description for each of the eight national council positions is listed below. 


    The national president is the chief executive officer and official representative of the Sorority and is responsible for overseeing the general welfare, interests, and growth of the Sorority. She serves as a trustee of the Sigma Kappa Foundation. The current national president is Laura L. Owsley, Alpha Chi , Georgetown College.

    The national vice president for alumnae is in charge of all matters pertaining to the promotion, organization, and general welfare of the alumnae membership, and performs the duties of the president in her absence or at her request. She serves as a trustee of the Sigma Kappa Foundation. The current national vice president for alumnae is Pamela L. Bergsten, Theta Tau , Kansas State University.

    The national vice president for collegiate chapters is responsible for all matters concerning the conduct and functioning of collegiate chapters, oversees the selection and training of field officers in charge of collegiate chapters, and directs all field officers engaged in chapter work. The current national vice president for collegiate chapters is Melissa Aupperle Ahrns, Theta Eta, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

    The national vice president for membership
    has one area of responsibility, the national recruitment program. She oversees the planning, promotion and organization of all matters pertaining to collegiate recruitment as well as the work of the field officers responsible for recruitment supervision. The current national vice president for membership is Jen Sciutto Hohman, Delta Iota, California State University - Chico.

    The national vice president for extension has one area of responsibility, the national extension program. She oversees the planning, promotion and organization of all matters pertaining to collegiate chapter extension of the Sorority, is responsible for the extension process of colonies including the cultivation, presentation, colonization and installations, and supervisors the work of the field officers responsible for collegiate extension.  The current national vice president for membership is Sarah Nelson Womble, Delta Tau, University of Central Arkansas.     The national vice president for programming develops and implements all educational and social programming for collegiate and alumnae chapters. She is in charge of the planning and supervision of the College Officer Training School (COTS). The current vice president for programming is Karyn Nishimura Sneath, Delta Sigma, Western Illinois University.

    The national vice president for communication maintains an accurate record of the proceedings of national conventions, records minutes of national council meetings, attends to all national correspondence, and keeps current all actions and standing rules as adopted by the national convention. She also oversees the communications, public relations, and recognition programs to ensure all Sorority communications are consistent and convey the strategic direction of the Sorority. The current national vice president for communication is Andi Fulton Sligh, Theta Xi, Auburn University.

    The national vice president for finance oversees the collection and disbursement of all national funds, sees that financial books and records are audited each year, serves on the National Housing Corporation board of directors and Foundation board of trustees and prepares a budget for national council approval. The current national vice president for finance is Cheri Morrell DeJong, Epsilon Omega, California Polytechnic State University.
